I could not find this fix after an extensive search, but I do think it is very unlikely I'm the only one to post this solution.

May
  • Step 1 Browse to your Windows folder and search for the files d3d10.dll and dxgi.dll (I could only do one at a time)

  • Step 2 Sort by date and locate the oldest version (dxgi.dll is dated 21/11/2010 and d3d10.dll is dated 14/07/2009).

  • Step 3 There are 2 versions of the files you will notice; one is 64bit the other is 32bit. You want the 32bit files for DMC4 so copy the files from the folder that starts x86_microsoft.... (ignore the amd64_microsoft... folders). Just to clarify, these 2 files are located in different locations.

  • Step 4 Copy these 2 files into the DMC4 game folder (the main one), hopefully that will get rid of those crashes for you.

  • Step 5 (Optional) I recommend enabling vsync and the frame cap in the game menu. I noticed the game was quite stuttery while using vsync and I couldn't quite understand why, so I set 'Frame Rate' 60 fps max and suddenly everything (with exception to the cutscenes) is much more smoother. If you know how to use Nvidia inspector, I highly recommend taking advantage of the negative LOD BIAS options (I use -1)...this game has some very nice textures, that the negative LOD bias brings out more.

(I was using a Nvidia GTX750 for testing, I don't think this fix is specific to that card (I have a more powerful system running AMD hardware that had exactly the same problem in DMC4), but I can't rule that out).

If this does not function properly (mine would crash after about 30 seconds before), you can get a list to locate the older versions of all the files from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838 and try copying them into the folder.

Devil May Cry 3 Patch For Windows 7 Hells Battle

The fact that Devil May Cry 4 will crash to desktop in DX10 mode is pretty well known and posted everywhere, as well as the recommendation that you uninstall the windows update KB2670838; which of course uninstalls Internet Explorer 11 and affects windows security; or more sensibly, simply run it in DX9 mode.

This update seems to also cause a lot of problems for other games that try to run in DX10 mode (Bioshock 2, Stalker Clear sky, FSX).

Other games that are broken by this KB2670838 may also be fixed by using the older versions of these files and copying them into the game folder. I have had no luck with Bioshock 2, but Stalker Clear sky seems to now be stable (I use d3d10_1.dll as well which I think is the dll for DX10.1.
