Issue:

When trying to save, close, or plot a drawing in AutoCAD, or exiting the program right after doing one of these operations, the program crashes with an error similar to one of the following. Also, it may not display an error and simply close, or it may freeze and require to be force-closed via the Windows Task Manager. Driver

AutoCAD Application
AutoCAD Application has stopped working.
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Causes:

  • Unsupported graphic card.
  • Graphics driver conflict.
  • Corrupted drawing file.
  • Corrupted AutoCAD user profile.
  • A specific version of the HP Designjet 500 printer driver is installed which conflicts with AutoCAD.
  • The file is being saved to a third-party cloud service, or the sync folder for the cloud service.
  • The file is being saved to an unsupported storage device such as a NAS or SAN (see Autodesk support for Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Storage Area Network (SAN) devices).
  • Missing operating system or software updates.
  • The drawing file contains unreconciled layers.
  • Too less RAM and too less page file space.
    • The RAM gets full by the process. So, the computer switches to the page file on the hard disk which will already decrease the performance a lot because the hard disk is much slower than the RAM. If the page file is also full, then the application will crash.

Solution:

Try the following solutions one at a time in the order listed, testing AutoCAD after each one:

Hp Designjet 500 42 Drivers

  1. Install the latest updates for AutoCAD (see Where to get Product Updates, Add-ons, and Enhancements).
  2. Install the latest available updates for the operating system.
  3. If using AutoCAD or AutoCAD-based products version 2014, install the Autodesk AutoCAD Crash Dialog on Close Hotfix.
  4. Ensure that the graphic card is recommended and certified (see Certified Graphics Hardware).
  5. Update to the latest graphic card driver (see How to update to the latest certified video driver).
  6. Make sure the system meets the minimum system requirements for AutoCAD (see System requirements for AutoCAD).
  7. Install DirectX to make sure it is up-to-date (see DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer).
  8. Set AutoCAD to use the main video card. This is for systems that have dual video cards (usually laptops) with Optimus (NVIDIA) or Enduro (AMD) technology (see How to configure Autodesk software to use high performance graphics)
  9. Uninstall the HP Designjet 500 printer:
    1. Check Programs and Features (or Add or Remove Programs for Windows XP) for HP Designjet 500 software to uninstall.
    2. Remove the printer from the printers folder (i.e., Devices and Printers).
    3. Complete the uninstall as described here: How to manually uninstall a printer driver in Windows.
    4. If this stops AutoCAD from crashing when exiting, then try using an alternative HP Designjet 500 driver.
    5. If the issue still occurs, see HP printer errors with AutoCAD products for other troubleshooting procedures.
  10. Turn off Windows Aero (Windows Vista and 7).
    1. Right-click the desktop and choose Personalize.
    2. Select the Windows Basic theme.
    3. Close the window.
  11. Log out of Autodesk 360 by clicking on your name at the top of the program and choosing 'Sign Out.'.
    • Note: The A360 Desktop app has been retired and should be uninstalled. See: A360 Desktop Retirement - June 19th, 2018
  12. Uninstall the Drawing Tabs Utility (an AutoCAD add-on).
    1. On the Loaded Applications tab, select MdiTab17.arx.
  13. Uninstall or uninstall and reinstall Autodesk Sketchbook Designer.
  14. Test if the issue is caused by third-party add-ons and plug-ins.
    1. Use the /Safemode startup switch as described here: How to protect AutoCAD from Viruses.
    2. Launch AutoCAD.
    3. Test the behavior again.
    4. If the issue does not occur anymore, close AutoCAD and remove the /Safemode switch.
    5. Uninstall third-party software one at a time, testing AutoCAD each time.
  15. Reset AutoCAD to defaults. There could be damaged profile or settings files that AutoCAD is not able to write to when exiting (see How to reset AutoCAD to defaults).
  16. Repair the drawing file. Data corruption within a drawing could be causing AutoCAD to crash. Clean and repair the file (see How to repair corrupt AutoCAD files).
  17. Check if CTB or STB files are corrupt. AutoCAD may be running into an issue when trying to load a corrupt plot style file:
    1. Use the STYLESMANAGER command to bring up the Plot Styles folder.
    2. Remove everything from the folder to a temporary location.
    3. Exit and relaunch AutoCAD and then test for the crash.
    4. If no crash occurs, start dropping items back into the Plot Styles folder one at a time, testing for the crash after each one.
  18. Check if the issue is caused by files being saved to third-party cloud storage or to the sync folder. See: Autodesk support for non-Microsoft networks.
    1. Cancel the sync process.
    2. Save the file and any associated files to the local drive.
  19. If using a network attached storage (NAS) or storage area network (SAN) device, test the files locally. See: Autodesk support for Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Storage Area Network (SAN) devices.
    1. Try saving the files to a local drive.
    2. If they save without issue, the crash can be avoided by saving to the local drive and then copying them to the network storage device.
  20. Reconcile all layers, or set the LAYERNOTIFY system variable to 0 (zero). See: How to turn off the unreconciled layers notification in AutoCAD.
  21. Install more RAM.
  22. Increase Page File Space:
    1. Open Control Panel and click 'System'.
    2. Click 'Advanced System Settings'.
    3. Switch to tab 'Advanced' and click in section 'Performance' the button 'Settings'.
    4. Switch to tab 'Advanced' and click 'Change...'.
    5. The next dialog allows increasing the page file space.
